โš ๏ธ TRAP #01
HIGH RISK

The Hidden Limited POA

A Limited Power of Attorney buried in your paperwork โ€” you're signing away legal authority over your vehicle before you even drive it home.

๐Ÿ“– Full Intel: The Limited Power of Attorney (POA) authorizes the dealership to handle titling and registration on your behalf. Sounds helpful โ€” until they use it to backdate paperwork, change terms, or process transactions you never approved. Always ask: 'What specific actions does this POA authorize?' Demand it be limited ONLY to DMV title transfer. Cross out any language beyond that scope and initial the change.
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Counter-Script: Ask: 'Can I see the POA scope in writing? I'm limiting this to DMV title transfer only.' If they refuse, call an attorney.
๐ŸŽช TRAP #02
HIGH RISK

Yo-Yo Financing (Spot Delivery Scam)

You drive home in your new car. Two weeks later, the dealer calls: 'The financing fell through. Come back and sign at a higher rate โ€” or return the car.'

๐Ÿ“– Full Intel: Spot delivery means the dealer lets you take the car before financing is finalized. They're betting you'll get so attached to the car that you'll accept worse terms when they 'discover' the original deal fell through. The FTC's CARS Rule (effective July 2024) requires dealers to disclose ALL financing terms upfront. If a dealer calls you back with changed terms, you have the RIGHT to return the vehicle and get your down payment back.
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Counter-Script: Never take delivery until financing is 100% finalized in writing. Add a clause: 'All terms are final as of this date. Dealer may not call buyer back to renegotiate.'
๐ŸŸง TRAP #03
HIGH RISK

The Four-Square Trap

Four boxes on a sheet of paper: price, trade-in, down payment, monthly payment. The dealer shuffles numbers between boxes to make you feel like you're winning โ€” while they're winning everywhere.

๐Ÿ“– Full Intel: The four-square is a psychological sleight of hand. Lower your monthly payment? They extended your loan term. Better trade-in value? They raised the vehicle price. You only 'win' in one box while losing in three others. NEVER negotiate monthly payments. Negotiate ONLY the out-the-door price of the vehicle.
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Counter-Script: Say: 'I only negotiate the total out-the-door price. Let's set that number first before discussing financing or trade-in separately.'
๐Ÿ’ธ TRAP #04
HIGH RISK

Mandatory Add-On Scam

$2,000 in 'already-installed' options: paint protection, window tint, LoJack, floor mats. None of which you asked for. All of which you're being forced to buy.

๐Ÿ“– Full Intel: Dealer-installed add-ons are often pure profit. Paint protection sealant that costs $50 to apply gets billed at $800. The FTC CARS Rule (July 2024) explicitly prohibits dealers from forcing buyers to purchase optional products as a condition of sale. If they refuse to remove add-ons, that is a federal violation you can report to the FTC.
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Counter-Script: Say: 'Please provide an itemized list of all add-ons with their wholesale cost. I'm exercising my right under the FTC CARS Rule to decline optional products.'
๐Ÿ“ˆ TRAP #05
HIGH RISK

Interest Rate Markup (Dealer Reserve)

Your lender approved you at 5.9%. The dealer tells you 7.9%. They pocket the 2% difference every month for the life of your loan โ€” called 'dealer reserve.'

๐Ÿ“– Full Intel: Dealers act as loan brokers and are legally allowed to mark up your interest rate and keep the spread. On a $35,000 car over 60 months, a 2% markup costs you $1,847 extra. Counter: Get pre-approved from your own bank or credit union BEFORE going to the dealership. Walk in with a check. Then see if the dealer can beat your rate.
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Counter-Script: Say: 'I have a pre-approval at X%. Can you beat that? If not, I'll use my own financing.' This eliminates their markup leverage entirely.
๐ŸŽฃ TRAP #06
๐Ÿ”’ UNLOCK

๐Ÿ”’ Bait-and-Switch Advertising

The ad shows a fully loaded SUV at $28,999. You arrive. That car 'just sold.' But they have this other one for $36,500.

๐Ÿ”„ TRAP #07
๐Ÿ”’ UNLOCK

๐Ÿ”’ Trade-In Value Manipulation

Your trade-in is worth $12,000. The dealer offers $8,500 โ€” but raises it to $11,000 when you push back. Where did that $2,500 come from? The vehicle price went up $2,500.

๐Ÿ‘‚ TRAP #08
๐Ÿ”’ UNLOCK

๐Ÿ”’ The Eavesdrop Tactic

Salesperson says 'Let me go check with my manager' โ€” leaves you alone with your partner. They're listening through the wall or a mic to find out your bottom line.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ TRAP #09
๐Ÿ”’ UNLOCK

๐Ÿ”’ The Extended Warranty Upsell

'You really need this extended warranty. What if the transmission fails?' It costs $3,500 and covers almost nothing due to exclusions buried in the fine print.

๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ TRAP #10
๐Ÿ”’ UNLOCK

๐Ÿ”’ GAP Insurance Markup

Your bank sells GAP insurance for $200โ€“$300. The dealer is charging you $800โ€“$1,200 for the exact same product.

๐Ÿ“… TRAP #11
๐Ÿ”’ UNLOCK

๐Ÿ”’ The Monthly Payment Focus

'What can you afford per month?' โ€” the most dangerous question in any dealership. It shifts focus from total price to payment, letting dealers extend loan terms and increase profit.

๐Ÿงบ TRAP #12
๐Ÿ”’ UNLOCK

๐Ÿ”’ Title Washing

A salvage, flood, or lemon-law buyback vehicle that has been re-titled in a different state to hide its damaged history.

๐Ÿš— TRAP #13
๐Ÿ”’ UNLOCK

๐Ÿ”’ The Spot Delivery Without Final Approval

You signed everything, drove home happy. Three days later: 'We need you to come back in and re-sign. Minor paperwork issue.' The terms changed.

๐Ÿงพ TRAP #14
๐Ÿ”’ UNLOCK

๐Ÿ”’ Fake Fees (Documentation, Market Adjustment, Admin)

$799 'doc fee.' $1,200 'market adjustment.' $400 'admin fee.' All pure dealer profit disguised as unavoidable costs.

โš–๏ธ TRAP #15
๐Ÿ”’ UNLOCK

๐Ÿ”’ Forced Arbitration Clause

Hidden in your purchase agreement: a clause waiving your right to sue the dealership in court. All disputes go to a private arbitration company the dealer chose.

Document Scanner

Every paper in the dealer's stack โ€” decoded. Know what to sign, what to refuse, and what to rewrite before you ever pick up a pen.

๐Ÿ“‹โš  HIGH RISK

Limited Power of Attorney (POA)

SIGN: CONDITIONAL

Authorizes dealer to act as your agent for titling/registration

โšก DANGER: Can be written broadly to allow dealer to make ANY transaction on your behalf
โœ… ACTION: Read scope carefully. Cross out anything beyond 'DMV title transfer only.' Initial your changes.
๐Ÿ“œโš  HIGH RISK

Retail Installment Sales Contract (RISC)

SIGN: YES โ€” BUT READ EVERY LINE

Your primary financing agreement. Contains interest rate, loan term, total cost, and all fees.

โšก DANGER: Interest rate markup, extended loan terms, hidden fees, yo-yo financing conditions
โœ… ACTION: Verify: APR matches your pre-approval. Check total amount financed vs. vehicle price. Look for yo-yo clause.
โš–๏ธโš  HIGH RISK

Arbitration Agreement

SIGN: NO โ€” OPT OUT

Waives your right to sue the dealer in court. Forces disputes to private arbitration.

โšก DANGER: Arbitrators are often dealer-friendly. You lose your day in court.
โœ… ACTION: Cross out. Write 'BUYER OPTS OUT.' Initial. Keep a copy.
๐ŸŽชโš  HIGH RISK

Spot Delivery Agreement

SIGN: REFUSE

Allows you to take delivery before financing is finalized.

โšก DANGER: Dealer can call you back 2 weeks later with changed terms โ€” you're already attached to the car.
โœ… ACTION: Refuse to take delivery until financing is 100% final. If they insist, add: 'All terms are final as signed. No renegotiation permitted.'

Dealership Scripts

Exactly what to say โ€” and when. These scripts flip the power dynamic the moment you walk through the door.

Opening
๐Ÿ“ Entering the Dealership
"'I'm here to look at [specific vehicle]. I have a pre-approval from [Bank] at [X]% APR. I negotiate total out-the-door price only. I don't discuss monthly payments.'"
Why it works: Sets the frame immediately. Signals you're informed and controlled. Eliminates 80% of manipulation tactics before they start.
Deflection
๐Ÿ“ When They Ask Your Budget
"'My budget is the vehicle I've already researched at fair market value. What's your best out-the-door price?'"
Why it works: Never reveal your maximum. The moment you say '$500/month,' every deal gets structured to that number regardless of total cost.
Shutdown
๐Ÿ“ The Four-Square Appears
"'I don't work from the four-square. Please give me a single line item: total vehicle price. We'll discuss trade-in and financing separately after.'"
Why it works: The four-square only works if you engage with it. Refusing to play destroys its leverage entirely.
๐Ÿ”’ Pressure to Decide Now
๐Ÿ”’ 'The Manager Said No'
๐Ÿ”’ F&I Office Add-On Pressure
๐Ÿ”’ 'This Offer Expires Today'

๐Ÿ”’ Discovering Junk Fees

Lemon Law (New Vehicles)

Every state has lemon law protection for vehicles with recurring defects. Most cover vehicles within 18โ€“24 months of purchase with 3โ€“4 repair attempts for same defect.

HOW TO USE: Document every repair attempt with dates and dealer invoices. Contact a lemon law attorney (most work on contingency โ€” free to you).
๐Ÿ’ณ

Credit Card Chargeback

If you paid a deposit or add-on by credit card and the dealer engaged in fraud, you may dispute the charge with your card issuer.

HOW TO USE: File within 60 days of statement. Provide written evidence of misrepresentation. Most major card issuers side with cardholders in clear fraud cases.
๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš–๏ธ

Auto Fraud Attorney (Free Consultation)
